The hauntingly beautiful folk song from Ireland called "She Moved Through the Fair" has always been a particular favorite of the composer. It is about a man who sees his lover at a county fair, but she seems to be moving away from him. She whispers the words, "It will not be long now till our wedding day." She passes mysteriously from this life and comes to him as a ghost and repeats the same promise. This setting by Turner should be played very freely and rhapsodically. The large leaps in both parts should sound as effortless as possible.
