Description

The rise of singing societies in Germany and France in the first half of the 19th century stimulated the flourishing of part song chorale writing: homophonic songs with the melody mainly in the upper voice. Weber, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Gounod, and Liszt all contributed to this style, writing accompanied and unaccompanied part songs for men’s, women’s, and mixed voices. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was the undisputed master in this genre writing many songs for various vocal combinations, very often unaccompanied. This album contains 3 short works originally for a cappella chorus, which show the harmonic richness of Brahms’s use of the human voice. For beginning to advanced quartet.
